A lunar eclipse occurs when the earth blocks the light from the sun, at which point the only light reaching the moon is the light that is bended by the earth's atmosphere. This light is red, which makes the moon turn red as well.
A solar eclipse is when the moon blocks the light from the sun, casting a shadow on the earth.
