    Snow flake colors    

 

Sometimes some colorful twinkling of snow flakes can be seen when they are at the right angle with the sun, and these colors are caused by refraction of the sun light in the snow crystals. These colors become a lot clearer when the photo is taken with the snow deliberately out of focus, as is shown in some of the examples below.

 

On the right is a short film sequence where I moved the camera while filming, and you can see that the individual snow crystals shift in color as the angle changes.

Another way to show these colors is by moving the camera during longer exposures.
